Guild Proficiency Levels

Proficiency levels are a measure of the skill and knowledge involved in creating a challenge entry. Proficiency levels advance through stages from beginner to expert both in skill and knowledge.

Proficiency Levels:

  • Basic – beginner; has learned a skill well enough to attempt reproducing it;
  • Competent – has completed a project using the skills or techniques in a manner that makes the item usable and aesthetically accurate;
  • Skilled – has completed a project using the skills or techniques with few mistakes, and has demonstrated knowledge of the history and period usage of the techniques;
  • Expert – has completed a project using as close to accurate period skills, materials, and techniques as feasible with few or no noticeable mistakes. Challenger should be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the history and period usage of the technique.

See the Proficiency Level Criteria file for further details. See also the Documentation Guide for further details. Both files are updated to 2023, and also listed in the Documents section.

Understanding the Chart

For example, to attain their Senior Student rank, the guild member will have:

– already completed the requirement for and attained the rank of Junior Student;

– successfully submitted for evaluation one basic proficiency piece of embellishment in a form different than that used in their Junior Student challenge;

– successfully submitted for evaluation one competent proficiency piece of embellishment which can either be the same form (but not the same piece) that was evaluated at basic proficiency for their Junior Student rank, or in a different form (but not the same as evaluated at basic proficiency at Senior Student rank).

For example, to attain their Senior Craftsman rank, the guild member will have:

– already completed all the requirements for and attained the ranks of Junior Student, Senior Student, Journeyman and Junior Craftsman;

– successfully submitted for evaluation one basic proficiency piece of embellishment in a form they have not previously challenged with for a lower rank;

– successfully submitted for evaluation two competent proficiency pieces of embellishment either in forms challenged at basic proficiency for any lower rank, or in forms they have not challenged with at any rank;

– successfully submitted for evaluation one skilled proficiency pieces of embellishment either in a form challenged at basic or competent proficiency for one of the lower ranks, or in a form they have not previously challenged with at any rank;

– taught two classes (or equivalent) in two different embellishment forms, one of which was a form they have not previously received teaching credit for.
